World champion Ysaora Thibus of France triumphed at the International Fencing Federation Grand Prix in the women's foil event in Turin, with the men's competition won by the United States' Gerek Meinhardt.

The world number three Thibus earned her first victory of the season after a third-place finish at the World Cup in Paris last month, overcoming Italian home favourite Erica Cipressa 15-9 in the final at the Pala Alpitour venue.

Victory against an Italian fencer in Olga Rachele Calissi by 15 points to nine had started Thibus' route to the final, and she followed it by beating Spain's Maria Mariño 15-8 and Italy's Francesca Palumbo 15-8.

She then eased past Ukraine's Alina Poloziuk 15-6 in the last four, with the other semi-final won 15-9 by Cipressa against fellow Italian Camilla Mancini.

Meinhardt's best performance this season had been 16th at the World Cup in Paris, but he clinched gold in Turin with a remarkable comeback in the final, coming from 7-0 and 13-8 behind to beat Italy's Filippo Macchi 15-14.

This was Meinhardt's second success at the Turin Grand Prix following on from 2020.

The two-time Olympic team bronze medallist started with a 15-5 victory against Belgium's Stef De Greef, followed by a 15-10 triumph over Japan's Riki Oishi.

He saw off another Japanese athlete in Kazuki Iimura 15-12 before a 15-12 quarter-final victory against fellow American Alexander Massialas.

Meinhardt's semi-final went 15-14 in his favour against former Olympic champion and Tokyo 2020 silver medallist Daniele Garozzo, while in the other half of the draw Macchi beat the Czech Republic's Olympic bronze medallist Alexander Choupenitch 15-11.

The next foil events are set to be a men's and women's individual and team World Cup in Egypt's capital Cairo from February 23 to 26.
