Renovation of the Maurice-Thorez swimming pool in the commune of Montreuil is affecting members of the French national diving team training in the capital, with the facility set to be used as a water polo training pool at next year's Olympic Games in Paris.

It means divers competing in 10-metre platform events need to move out of the Iles-de-France, where Paris is located, as Maurice-Thorez is the only venue with such facilities in the region.

"There are no other diving boards at 10 metres in Ile-de-France," he national technical director of the French Swimming Federation, Julien Issoulié told French news agency Agence France-Presse.

"We knew this problem would happen, but not so soon.

"We tried to rethink the training and preparation programme.

"There will be a mix with longer internships than expected, particularly in Strasbourg, and with new sites such as Aix-la-Chapelle in Germany."

Former European diving champion Benjamin Auffret was critical of the move, claiming that the nation's athletes were being "deprived" of their training base just over a year before Paris 2024.

"The Olympic Games at home are every hundred years," said Auffret on Twitter.

"Now, our athletes, our divers who have worked all their lives for this are being deprived of their place of training one year from this event and we're going to ask them for medals."

Development work was due to begin in September later this year, but this has been brought forward to March.

The local community have to travel to the Murs-à-Pêches pool for swimming until after the Olympics, which is due to take place between July 26 and August 11 next year.

Red Star Club of Montreuil are the local swimming team, with 1,500 members affected by the move.
