Australia's two-time Olympic champion Michael Diamond has lost an attempt to overturn a 10-year gun licence ban.

Diamond won back-to-back golds in the men's trap shooting event at Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000, and is a five-time Commonwealth Games gold medallist.

The 50-year-old had his category A firearms licence suspended for 10 years in 2018 after being found guilty of firearms and drink-driving offences in Port Stephens in 2017.

Diamond had been challenging his ban with a review by the Civil and Administrative Tribunal, claiming he wished to use long arms as a member of a target shooting club.

"The applicant has had a 29-year professional shooting career, having won gold medals at the Olympic Games and World Championships," his submission to the Tribunal read, as reported by Australian public broadcaster ABC.

"He has been trusted to compete and travel with firearms during this time."

A submission by representatives of the New South Wales Police Commissioner argued he was not fit to hold a licence, referencing 12 police calls to domestic incidents involving Diamond between 2003 and 2021.

During one incident in May 2016 he was reportedly " aggressive and very intoxicated and drove off in his vehicle with a firearm".

"The applicant's domestic history shows a lack of self-control and this poses a risk to public safety," the submission said, as reported by ABC.

"The applicant's traffic record shows a disregard for public safety, including his own and for the law.

"The applicant's contraventions of firearm laws, further supports that it is not in the public interest for the applicant to be authorised to possess a firearm."

The Civil and Administrative Tribunal ruled that it would be "contrary to the public interest" for Diamond to hold a firearms licence in upholding the ban.
