Organisers of the 2023 European Games in Kraków-Małopolska have signed an agreement with the AGH University of Science and Technology, for the creation of a village for athletes participating in the multi-sport event.

The agreement means a village will be created on the university’s grounds in Krakow.

Around 7,000 athletes are due to compete at the European Games across 19 sports between June 21 and July 2.

The agreement was signed by three AGH representatives - President Professor Jerzy Lis, Chancellor Henryk Ziolo and university town director Radoslaw Serwicki, as well as two European Games representatives - vice-president and chief operating officer Michal Langer and vice-president and administrative and economic director Maciej Kurp.

The agreement between European Games Ltd and the university ensures the reservation of land and facilities for the village, with a subsequent agreement set to be signed this year to detail the entire project.

AGH President Professor Lis said: "The signing of the agreement is another very important step in the process of preparing for the European Games.

"I am very pleased that the possibility of using AGH's infrastructure for the Games has arisen.

"An athletes' village will be built on the premises of the university town, and this is a very important element of the organisation of the event.

"Preparations have been going on for some time, we have been in talks with the Organising Committee basically since the establishment of this company.

"We are confident that everything will take place according to our plans."

European Games Organising Committee vice-president Michal Langer added: "The AGH University of Science and Technology is our largest non-sports partner.

"We will create the athletes village on the premises of the university town, and without it would not be possible to organise the Games.

"We hope that the athletes will feel at home here."

Although there is no sporting competition scheduled on the AGH’s site it is hoped the athletes village will resemble the Olympic Village.
