Norwegian Johannes Høsflot Klæbo is one race away from making history at the Tour de Ski, and now just needs a victory tomorrow in Val di Fiemme to become the first cross-country skier to finish the competition undefeated.

The five-time Olympic gold medallist claimed his sixth win in the tournament today, which is part of the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) Cross-Country World Cup season.

More accomplished as a sprinter, Klæbo excelled today in the men's 15-kilometre mass start classic race, finishing the course at the front of the field in 39min 59.2sec.

He finished just 0.4 seconds in front of his compatriot Pål Golberg and over a second in front of Italian Francesco de Fabiani and Antoine Cyr of France.

De Fabiani claimed the bronze in a photo finish.

Swedish skier Calle Halfvarsson is Klæbo's closest rival in the general classification and today finished fifth, 1.6 seconds behind the Norwegian.

Klæbo's lead going into tomorrow is 1:02.

Katharina Hennig won the women's race, denying a third victory of the competition for Sweden's Frida Karlsson.

The German finished in 44:26.7, with Karlsson, Kerttu Niskanen of Finland and United States' Rosie Brennan all within a second of her in a sprint to the line.

Brennan was the unlucky one of the quartet, being denied a podium.

Teresa Stadlober of Austria was a distant fifth, 10 seconds out, finishing far ahead of the rest of the field.

Karlsson now has a gap of 1:12 to Tiril Udnes Weng of Norway, who finished far behind the leaders today in seventh.

Tomorrow's last leg will be the final climb mass start race, covering 9km.
