At the time of his death, he was the club doctor for English Championship football club West Bromwich Albion, who wore black armbands in his memory during their match against Sunderland on Monday (December 12).

Those at the Royal Ballet School mourned his loss too, where he served as lead sport physician.

Widdowson also spent 12 years as the team doctor for Bath rugby union team.

Widdowson had more than 20 years of experience in the industry, particularly in rugby where he was the team doctor for Wales' under-18 and under-20 men's squads, caring for many of the current senior team.

Temporarily, Widdowson was also the men's senior team doctor in 2021.

Prior to his time with the Welsh Rugby Union, Widdowson held positions with the Rugby Football Union in England.

Widdowson was also instrumental in implementing the role of the independent matchday doctor in rugby union's concussion-management protocol.

Wales and Scarlets flyhalf Sam Costelow was one of those to pay tribute to Widdowson.

"He was class - he was a huge help to me when I broke my jaw playing for Wales under-20s against New Zealand out in Argentina in 2019," said Costelow.

"He could speak Spanish, so the fact he could translate everything they were saying made a difficult time that much easier to deal with.

"He was a kind man and was more than just a doctor for us as players. 

"You could go to him and speak about anything, and he was always there to help.

"I spoke to some of the boys after the Scarlets game yesterday who had come through the U20s, and their reaction was all the same, they were all devastated with the news and it's so sad for his family and friends."

During his time with England, Widdowson was team doctor for the men's under-16s and the men's A national team.
