Former England cricketer Andrew "Freddie" Flintoff has been hospitalised after being hurt in an accident while filming the motoring television programme Top Gear.

The 45-year-old, who co-presents the show, crashed while filming a car review at Dunsfold Park Aerodrome in Britain.

He received medical care at the scene before being taken to hospital for further treatment.

Flintoff's injuries are not thought to be life-threatening as it is said that the accident did not happen at high speed while a BBC spokesperson said details would be confirmed "in due course".

"Freddie was injured in an accident at the Top Gear test track this morning - with crew medics attending the scene immediately," the spokesperson said.

"He has been taken to hospital for further treatment and we will confirm more details in due course."

Flintoff also suffered an injury in February 2019 when filming for the show after crashing into a market stall in Mansfield.

In September of the same year, he crashed during a drag race while he was filming at Elvington Airfield in Yorkshire, but was unharmed.

He joined the programme as a host in 2019 and stars alongside actor Paddy McGuiness and automotive journalist Chris Harris.

Flintoff built a successful career in cricket and played for England from 1998 to 2009, amassing 79 Test, 141-one day internationals and seven Twenty20 appearances.

He was a key factor to England's successes in the 2005 and 2009 Ashes series.

Former Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond was involved in a serious crash, also at Elvington, in 2006, leaving him in a coma.
