There are some notable names on the list of Russian athletes sanctioned including figure skater Kamila Valieva, who tested positive for trimetazidine during the Russian National Figure Skating Championships in December 2021.

The Russian Olympic Committee team that won figure skating gold during the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics included Valieva, who is currently the subject of an appeal by the World Anti-Doping Agency, which is seeking a four-year ban against the athlete if the Court of Arbitration for Sport rules that the Russian Anti-Doping Agency did not sufficiently take correct action over Valieva’s positive test.

Gymnast Ivan Kuliak, who has been banned for the sport for one year after wearing the pro-invasion of Ukraine Z symbol during an International Gymnastics Federation Apparatus World Cup in Doha, Qatar in March, is also among the notable names on the list.

The list includes one Ukrainian, football coach Anatoliy Tymoshchuk, an assistant coach at Russian Premier League club Zenit St Petersburg, and features athletes from 14 sports.

A former captain of the Ukraine national team, Tymoshchuk is the nation's all-time most capped player with 144 caps. 

He took part in Ukraine's first-ever FIFA World Cup in 2006 and their first European Championship in 2012. He won the Ukrainian Footballer of the Year on three occasions.

In 2022, the Ukrainian Association of Football stripped Tymoshchuk of his Ukrainian coaching licence and titles because he did not speak out against Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine and stayed on as assistant coach at Zenit Saint Petersburg.

The sport with the highest number of sanctioned athletes is figure skating with Valieva joined on the list by Alexander Gallyamov, Nikita Katsalapov, Mark Kondratyuk, Roman Kostomarov, Anastasia Mishina, Vladimir Morozov, Yevhen Plushenko, Iryna Rodnina, Victoria Sinitsina, Adelina Sotnikova and Yevgenia Tarasova.

Alongside Kuliak four more artistic gymnasts are sanctioned - Nikita Nagornyy, Aleksey Nemov, Vdalislava Urazova and Victoria Listunova.  

Four rhythmic gymnasts are also on the list - twin sisters Dina and Arina Averina, Daria Dmitrieva and Alina Kabaeva.

Kabaeva is allegedly the girlfriend of Russian President Vladimir Putin and earlier this month was photographed wearing a brooch with a Z symbol - which represents victory.

Kabaeva has already been sanctioned by the United Kingdom and United States Governments, and the European Union.

Eight wrestlers feature in the form of Roman Vlasov, Musa Evloev, Alexander Karelin, Abdulrashid Sadulaev, Zaurbek Sidakov, Artur Taimazov, Dzambolat Tedeev and Zaur Uguev.

There are six cross-country skiers listed in Alexander Bolshunov, Alexander Legkov, Yehor Sorin, Denis Spitsov, Veronika Stepanova and Aleksey Chervotkin.

Five boxers feature on the list in Nikolai Valuev, Hryhoriy Drozd, Eduard Kravtsov, Dmitry Pirog and Alexander Povetkin.

Chess athletes Anatoly Karpov, Serhii Karyakin and Serhii Shipov, footballers Roman Shirokov and Dmitri Tarasov and biathletes Anton Shipulin and Serhiy Chepikov also feature as part of the list.

They are joined on the list by swimmer Yevhen Rylov, speed skater Svitlana Zhurova, ski jumper Irina Avvakumova, martial arts athletes Alexander Yemelianenko, Petr Yan and Alexander Shlemenko and hockey players Alexander Aksenenko and Vyacheslav Fetisov.

Rylov was banned by World Aquatics, formerly the International Swimming Federation, for nine months following his attendance at the rally.

The sanctions will last for ten years and include the blocking of assets of persons on the territory of Ukraine, the restriction of trade operations, a ban on entering Ukraine and the removal of state awards of Ukraine.

Seven of the athletes on the list - Bolshunov, the Averina sisters, Katsalapov, Sinitsina, Tarasova and Morozov, all appeared on stage at a pro-war rally organised by Russian President Putin at Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow in March.   

Meanwhile Olympic gold medallist Nagornyy, who features on the list, marched in a Victory Day parade in Moscow in May, while wrestlers Vlasov and Evloev, who also feature on the list, were reportedly in attendance at the Victory Day event.
