Samoa's men and New Zealand's women earned their first World Rugby Sevens Series victories of the season at the final event of the calendar year in Cape Town.

A 12-7 victory for Samoa against New Zealand in the men's final at the Cape Town Stadium moved them top of the Series standings, level on 47 points with South Africa who finished fourth at their home event.

Faafoi Falaniko opened the scoring for Samoa, but a converted try by Brady Rush had New Zealand 7-5 in front going into the closing stages.

However, player of the final Vaa Apelu Maliko stepped up to cross the whitewash, with Falaniko adding the extras to secure Samoa's first victory on the Series since 2016.

They had earlier beaten South Africa 10-7 in the semi-finals, with the hosts losing 22-14 to the United States in the match for bronze.

In the Women's Series, New Zealand moved level on points with Australia on 38 points at the top by beating their rivals 31-14 in the final, avenging a defeat at the first event of the season in Dubai.

Player of the final Tyla Nathan-Wong scored two tries and notched three conversions in a dominant New Zealand display in the final.

Bronze went to the US, who overcame Ireland 20-12.

Hamilton in New Zealand is set to stage the next men's and women's Series event on January 21 and 22.
