Members of the Canadian Paralympic Committee (CPC) have made a site visit to competition venues for the Santiago 2023 Parapan American Games.

Led by CPC executive director Catherine Gosselin-Després, the Canadian delegation held intensive meetings with on-site officials to discuss arrangements for the Games, scheduled to take place from November 17 to 26 next year.

Almost 2,000 athletes and 18 disciplines will be involved, with all events based in the Metropolitan Region.

In what was the second visit of this type after attendance by a Colombian team, the Canadian group viewed key areas such as the Parapan American Village in Cerrillos, the Santiago Metro and the National Stadium Park.

Gosselin-Després said: "We brought a large delegation for this visit, as we want to be familiar with the locations, the Athletes' Village and the entire city.

"Many Canadians have never been to Chile, so we wanted to make sure we have the best for our athletes and get as much information as possible."

Regarding the delegation's impressions of the Chilean capital, she added: "Everyone seems to have loved the city, we have felt that the people have received us in a great way.

"We liked the food, the restaurants are very good and the people have given us a very good vibe.

"Also, we have felt safe in Santiago, which is not the case everywhere, so it has been a great experience so far."

She said that the advanced staff felt comfortable with the Parapan American Games Village adding: "It's still under construction, which is great.

"I think everyone really liked it, as the venues are not that far away, which is important for a Paralympic team because of accessibility issues."

The CPC expects to have more than 100 Para athletes at Santiago 2023.

"We want to do our best to be well up in the medal table, although we know that we will have to compete with strong countries like Brazil or the United States," Gosselin-Després concluded.

Among the main milestones prior to next year's Parapan American Games, will be the Chefs de Mission Seminar in April, when delegates from the 33 participating countries are scheduled to meet in Santiago.
