The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has described its boxing qualification system for the Paris 2024 Olympics as a "fair process" for all National Olympic Committees (NOCs).

Boxing is set to be overseen by an IOC Taskforce for the second consecutive Olympic Games after the International Boxing Association (IBA) was stripped of any involvement due to ongoing governance concerns.

The IOC Executive Board approved a revised qualification system focused on next year's continental multi-sport Games and two additional qualification tournaments in 2024 at its last meeting in September.

Sports director Kit McConnell revealed here during the Executive Board's latest meeting that National Olympic Committees and National Federations had been sent a detailed version of the system.

"The qualification criteria for the Olympic Games Paris 2024 build on the criteria that were developed for and successfully applied to the participants in the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020," McConnell said.

The world qualification tournaments aim to provide a geographical balance of opportunities, and provide an increased number of chances to qualify compared to Tokyo 2020.

The system seeks to provide "a fair process for all NOCs" by offering boxers in all weight categories entry to the same number of qualification events.

It retains athlete eligibility criteria used for Tokyo 2020, and reviews the quota place distribution for each weight category and qualification tournament compared to the IBA's initial proposal.

"This process puts boxers first, reducing the complexity of the qualification process by using existing regional events and giving up to three qualification opportunities, ultimately achieving a fair and equal pathway for all boxers," the IOC claimed.

Detailed event regulations for Paris 2024 qualifiers are due to be published next year, with anti-doping testing to be carried out in collaboration with the International Testing Agency and in addition to the IBA's existing programme.

In September, the IBA criticised "late" changes to the qualification system for Paris 2024, which it claimed would have a "significant and direct impact" on events scheduled for the next two years.

The IBA, then known as AIBA, was stripped of its IOC recognition in June 2019.

Ongoing concerns mean boxing is off the initial programme for Los Angeles 2028, and the IOC yesterday issued another warning to the governing body, led by Russian official Umar Kremlev, over its governance, financial transparency and sustainability, and the integrity of its refereeing and judging processes.
