President of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) Mustapha Berraf has said the organisation is looking to make teqball part of the programme for the 2027 African Games.

Speaking to insidethegames exclusively here at the Teqball World Championships, Berraf said he saw the Accra 2023 African Games as a stepping stone to full implementation.

Next year, teqball is due to be a demonstration sport at the Games in Ghana.

"ANOCA actually plans to make teqball a full sporting discipline incorporated into the medal table at the next African Games in 2027," said Berraf to insidethegames.

"Participation for the African Games in 2023 will be on a purely demonstrative basis.

"This is our common future."

An ANOCA delegation is here in Nuremberg, which also includes first vice-president Joao Da Costa Alegre Afonso.

Cape Verdean Olympic Committee President Filomena Maria Fortes was also present at the Championships.

"We noted that the sport is becoming more and more widespread in Africa and that it constitutes today a means of practising sport," added Berraf.

"It is a fantastic step forward which I think reflects the demonstration and the will of its leaders.

"Forty-two African countries have adopted the practice of this sports discipline which combines technique with dexterity associated with play and skill."

Teqball is already set to be part of the African Beach Games in Tunis, as well as the 2023 African Youth Games in Brazzaville.

Berraf noted that there are more people in Africa than China and India combined, saying this showed the potential of the sport on the continent, adding that the organisation was among the first to sign a Memorandum of Understanding related to teqball.

The 2023 European Games in Kraków-Małopolska is set to have teqball as part of its programme.

The 2027 African Games does not have a host yet, but Burkina Faso and Zimbabwe are interested in becoming hosts for the event.

The 2023 African Games are scheduled to take place from August 4 to 19 2023.
