Lacrosse, on the shortlist for the Los Angeles 2028 Games, will stage new competitions in the coming months of the Sixes format that made its international debut in the World Games 2022 in Birmingham, Alabama.

Both the Premier Lacrosse League and Athletes Unlimited have announced plans for new competitions involving this fast-paced discipline for men and women players, which would be the likely format also at a future Olympics.

Athletes Unlimited announced an exhibition game on December 17 in Springfield, Virginia that will feature 16 of its lacrosse athletes competing against each other in the Sixes format.

The Premier Lacrosse League also announced this week its 2023 Championship Series, a Sixes competition between the top four teams from the 2022 season taking place in Springfield, Virginia from February 22 to 26.

The four teams will play three days of round robin competition, before semi-finals on Saturday, February 25 and a championship game on Sunday.

Canada won both the men’s and women’s Sixes tournament at the World Games in Alabama, with the United States taking silver in both competitions.

It was a first appearance for male lacrosse players in the World Games; women lacrosse players had taken part in the 2017 edition.
