The 24-year-old, seeded 22^nd for the tournament, produced the performance of his life to beat Nadal, who appeared to struggle in the hot and humid conditions, sweating profusely throughout the match, in four sets.

Tiafoe took the first set 6-4, before Nadal took the second by the same scoreline, getting his first break of the match in the tenth game of the set when his opponent double-faulted.

Tiafoe broke in the seventh game of the third set, with the American serving it out with a game featuring three winners and an ace to take the set 6-4.

Tiafoe then claimed the fourth set 6-3, to equal his best Grand Slam performance so far, to end the 22 time Grand Slam champion’s hopes of claiming a third major tournament of the calendar year.

Elsewhere in the men’s singles draw, ninth seed Andrey Rublev of Russia, playing as a neutral, defeated Britain’s Cameron Norrie, the seventh seed, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.

In the women’s draw, top seed Iga Świątek of Poland recovered from a set down to defeat unseeded German Jule Niemeier.

Niemeier got off to a flying start winning eight of the first 11 points and breaking Świątek in the opening game.

After getting a second break later in the set Niemeier, currently ranked number 108 in the world, closed it out 6-2.

There were breaks of serve in seven of the ten games in set two, which Świątek claimed 6-4.

Niemeier’s first serve percentage dropped off in the decider with double French Open champion Świątek closing it out 6-0.

Elsewhere in the women’s draw eighth seed Jessica Pegula of the United States defeated double Grand Slam champion Petra Kvitová of the Czech Republic 6-3, 6-2.
