The first three stages of this year's Vuelta are being held in The Netherlands before the Grand Tour moves on to Spain, and the second day provided riders with a 175.1 kilometres flat route from 's-Hertogenbosch to Utrecht.

Bora-Hansgrohe's Bennett worked himself to the front of a bunch sprint to take a second stage victory in 3hrs 49min 34sec.

That was his fourth individual stage victory on the Vuelta and first since 2020.

He earned a 12-second time bonus, with Denmark's Mads Pedersen of Trek-Segafredo taking the nine-second bonus for placing second and Belgium's Tim Merlier of Alpecin-Deceuninck the four-second boost after crossing the finish line in third.

Defending champion Primož Roglič of Slovenia and Jumbo-Visma, seeking to become the first rider to win four consecutive Vuelta titles, stayed within the main peloton.

Occupying the red jersey going into the third stage is his team-mate Mike Teunissen, the Dutch rider who placed fourth on the second stage.

Teunissen is on 4:14:14 in the general classification, the same time as five of his team-mates including Roglič after Jumbo-Visma's success in the team time trial yesterday.

Tomorrow's third stage is another flat route - 193.5km starting and finishing in the city of Breda.
