Zambia claimed third place at football’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after a 1-0 victory over Nigeria in Casablanca, Morocco.

The Copper Queens secured bronze medals at the tournament with an own goal enough to separate the sides in a closely contested third place match at the Stade Mohamed V.

The winning moment came on the half hour mark with a powerful strike from Evarine Katongo, which hit the post before bouncing into the net off the unfortunate Nigeria keeper Chiamaka Nnadozie.

The result meant defending champions Nigeria went home with a fourth placed finish.

The competition is due to conclude tomorrow with the final, as hosts Morocco take on South Africa at the Stade Prince Mouley Abdallah in Rabat.

A total of 45,562 spectators watched Morocco’s semi-final win over Nigeria on Monday (July 18) – a record crowd for a women’s football match on the continent.
