Świątek faced Dutch player Lesley Pattinama Kerkhove, ranked number 138 in the world in the singles, and won the firsts et 6-4, before dropping the second set by the same scoreline.

Świątek regrouped in the deciding set, which she won 6-3, to seal her place in round three in just over two hours.

The women’s draw also saw the day’s biggest upset, as to the delight of the home crowd at the All England Club in London, British wildcard Katie Boulter beat sixth seed Karolína Plíšková of the Czech Republic.

Plíšková, runner-up last year to Australian Ashleigh Barty, who has since retired from the sport, took the opening set 6-3, before Boulter won a see-saw second set on a tie-break 7-6.

The 28-year-old, ranked number 118 in the world, then took the third set 6-4 to claim an emotional triumph, as it came just two days after the death of her grandmother.

Elsewhere in the women’s draw fourth seed Paula Badosa was a comfortable 6-3, 6-2 winner over Romania’s Irina Bara, while eighth seed Jessica Pegula of the United States recovered from dropping the first set to beat Britain’s Harriet Dart 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.

Coco Gauff of the United States triumphed 6-2, 6-3 against Romanian Mihaela Buzarnescu in the last match of the day on Centre Court, while Harmony Tan of France, conqueror of Serena Williams in a memorable first round match, defeated Sara Sorribes-Tormo of Spain, the 32^nd seed, 6-3, 6-4.

Two former Wimbledon champions also advanced, with Romania’s Simona Halep, winner in 2019, overcoming Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium 7-5, 6-4, while 2011 and 2014 winner Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic beat Ana Bogdan of Romania 6-1, 7-6.

In the men’s singles draw, it was a good day for the top seeds, with second seed Rafael Nadal of Spain overcoming Ricardas Berankis of Lithuania 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

Fourth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece also triumphed, defeating Jordan Thompson of Australia 6-2, 6-3, 7-5.

Two men’s seeds were beaten on day four, with a British player responsible for another of the upsets, as Liam Broady beat 12^th seed Diego Schwartzman of Argentina in five sets.

Broady won the opening set 6-2, before Schwartzman took the second 6-4.

The Argentine then raced through set three 6-0, part of a run of 11 successive games, and went a break up in the fourth, before Broady battled back to claim it on a tiebreak.

The world number 132 then raced through the fifth set 6-1, claiming victory in just under four hours.

Thirteenth seed Denis Shapovalov of Canada was also on the end of an upset, as he was beaten by world number 56 Brandon Nakashima, with the American running out a 6-2, 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 winner.

Third round action in the men’s and women’s singles draws is due to begin tomorrow.
