A prize-winning floral display has been unveiled at Birmingham’s Cathedral Square to celebrate next month's Commonwealth Games.

The display won a gold medal at the Chelsea Flower Show and has been inspired by the Games.

It features the event's logo and is crowned by “Perry" the Birmingham 2022 mascot.

"I think rebuilding it in Cathedral Gardens is the right location, its a very popular site, particularly for young people, coming into the city centre," Birmingham City Council leader Ian Ward told insidethegames.

"The display that we entered into the Chelsea Flower Show was based on the Commonwealth Games and the parks department put this display together.

"They have now managed to win ten consecutive gold medals - I think that’s quite an achievement for the parks department.

"The people of Birmingham will get to see that gold medal display and I am sure we will all be proud of what this city is doing this summer."

The display has been re-assembled in Birmingham for the Games and features a set of cricket stumps to recognise that women’s cricket is included on the programme for the first time.

A hockey player and athlete are also included alongside a clock tower from the University of Birmingham to represent one of the three Athletes’ Villages at the Games.

"I am delighted to see the Birmingham 2022-themed display come back home to our proud host city after its gold win at Chelsea," Birmingham City Council environment cabinet member Majid Mahmood said.

"The Cathedral’s grounds are a stunning setting for people to come and see this fantastic creation, made thanks to the skills and talents of the council’s parks and nurseries team."

The Very Reverend Matt Thompson, Dean of Birmingham Cathedral, led a short ceremony to bless the display.

"It is a real honour to be able to add this fantastic display to our grounds for visitors to enjoy this summer," he said.

"Cathedral Square is the largest green space in the city centre, which is enjoyed by thousands of people everyday, the installation will make a beautiful addition to the existing floral arrangements around the cathedral building which are cared for by our dedicated team of flower arrangers," the Dean said.

He was joined at the ceremony by Birmingham Lord Mayor Maureen Cornish.

"I know many people pass this area on a daily basis, the Chelsea-winning display adds another attraction to our fantastic city and will help build excitement for the Commonwealth Games," Cornish said.

Construction has also begun on a Commonwealth Table - a covered table that will seat 30 people, situated in Cathedral Square, that is set to form part of the Birmingham 2022 Festival.

It has been funded by the City Council through the "Creative City" strand of the Festival programme and is expected to be in place from early July until mid-September.
