Momota, seeded second for the BWF World Tour Super 1000 event, has struggled for form since winning the Super 750 Indonesia Masters in November last year, and fell in three games to Gemke in the men's singles tournament at the Istana Gelora Bung Karno.

Ranked 13^th in the world, Gemke triumphed 21-19, 19-21, 21-14 to set up a second round tie against France's Brice Leverdez.

Leverdez notched an impressive 23-21, 21-10 victory over Srikanth Kidambi of India, a runner-up at last year's World Championships who helped his country to win the Thomas Cup last month.

Fourth seed Chou Tien-Chen of Chinese Taipei was also taken to three games in his opener, but saw off Thailand's Kunlavut Vitidsarn 22-20, 19-21, 21-12.

Seventh seed Jonatan Christie of Indonesia eased past Thailand's Kantaphon Wangcharoen 22-20, 21-8, but eighth seed Lakshya Sen of India lost 21-10, 21-9 to his compatriot Prannoy H.S.

Olympic silver medallist and second seed Tai Tzu-ying of Chinese Taipei won both games 21-14 against Singapore's Yeo Jia Min to reach the women's singles second round, where she is set to play Iris Wang of the United States following her 21-9, 21-15 victory against Germany's Yvonne Li.

The other seeded players in action today also progressed in straight games.

Olympic champion Chen Yufei of China, seeded fourth, beat South Korea's Kim Ga-eun 21-10, 21-17, while sixth seed and Rio 2016 bronze medallist Nozomi Okuhara of Japan won 21-14, 21-18 against Chinese Taipei's Pai Yu-po.

In an all-Thailand clash, eight seed Ratchanok Intanon triumphed 21-17, 21-17 over Pornpawee Chochuwong.
