Primož Roglič of Slovenia produced a professional ride alongside Jumbo-Visma team-mate Jonas Vingegaard to win the 74th Critérium du Dauphiné.

Denmark's Vingegaard won the eighth and final stage of the competition, crossing the line at Plateau de Solaison in a time of 3hrs 49min 20sec after the 138-kilometre stage.

He and Roglič, who held a 44-second lead going in to the finale, rode together at the end of the race to ultimately give the latter a comfortable triumph, in an overall time of 29hrs 11min 22sec.

AG2R Citroën rider Ben O'Connor of Australia finished third on the day and in the overall standings, after losing ground with five kilometres to go and ending up some 15 seconds behind the pair.

"It was quite incredible," said Vingegaard.

"We had planned to attack and that [Roglič] should follow me because we wanted to see if we could drop everyone.

"We succeeded with that so I think we can be very happy and proud of what we did.

"To win a stage and to be second overall is great for me.

"To be honest, it would be hard to be 1-2 in the Tour because there will be many GC contenders. But we aim to at least have one of us win the Tour."

Stage one winner and fellow Jumbo-Visma rider Wout Van Aert of Belgium finished in 69th on the final stage, but still managed to hold on to the green jersey after amassing a lot of points earlier in the week.

There was no doubt about the winner of the best climber jersey. as Frenchman Pierre Rolland, representing B&B Hotels p/b KTM, came out on top again to round off an emphatic victory in the discipline.

Norwegian Tobias Halland Johannessen of Uno-X Pro Cycling, who finished in tenth place overall, was the best young rider of the race and earned the white jersey with an overall time over a minute faster than his closest competitor.

Many of the riders including Roglič will now be firmly focused on the Tour de France, the second of the year's Grand Tour races, which is scheduled to take place from July 1 to 24.
