World number one Iga Świątek extended her winning run to 32 matches undefeated in women's singles despite a scare from the unseeded Chinese rising talent Zheng Qinwen, meaning she heads into the quarter-finals of the French Open at Roland Garros.

After losing the first set, Świątek's title campaign and impressive winning streak looked under threat - but the 19-year-old Zheng appeared to suffer a hip injury for the rest of the match, which hampered her chances of upsetting the Polish player.

Świątek, who headed into the fourth round as the only seed in the top 10 still involved, faced Zheng in what was a mirror image of the world number one's 2020 campaign.

The Chinese player had defeated Romanian Simona Halep previously in the tournament, who was the top seed in 2020 when Świątek defeated her in the fourth round on her way to her first Grand Slam.

Determined to not let history repeat itself, the now-top seed went on to defeat her unseeded foe in the fourth round 6-7, 6-0, 6-2.

Her opponent in the quarter-finals is to be the next highest-ranked player left in the bracket, American 11th seed Jess Pegula.

Pegula came from a set down to overcome unseeded Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.

It means she matches her best Grand Slam performance in the singles, having made the quarter-finals of the 2021 and 2022 Australian Open.

Two neutral players are vying for a place in that semi-final, with 29th seed Veronika Kudermetova and 20th seed Daria Kasatkina to meet on Wednesday (June 1).

Both athletes were previously representing Russia, but the International Tennis Federation said these players could only compete under a neutral banner, as part of sporting sanctions against Russia for its involvement in the invasion of Ukraine.

This also affects players from Belarus.

Kudermetova knocked out 22nd seed Madison Keys of the United States after struggling in the first set - going on to win 1-6, 6-3, 6-1.

This made it the first time she has qualified for a Grand Slam singles quarter-final.

Kasatkina defeated Italian 28th seed Camila Giorgi 6-2, 6-2 to seal her spot in the last eight, matching her best result at the French Open.
