Compatriots Matthew Aldridge and Joshua Bugajski finished behind as Harry Glenister and Matthew Rossiter took the same position in heat four.

Serbia’s Martin Mackovic and Miloš Vasić, Spain’s Jaime Canalejo Pazos and Javier Garcia Ordóñez and The Netherlands’ Nicolas van Sprang and Leonid van Lierop all won heats in the event.

Britain also triumphed in taking top spots in both of the women’s double sculls heats.

Lola Anderson and Georgia Brayshaw made their mark in the first heat with a time of 7:15.13 and Jessica Marie Leyden and Lucy Glover notched 7:21.79.

The Netherlands stamped their authority in the men’s four thanks to three of the four teams progressing to the semi-finals.

The combination of Daan Vos de Wael, Wibout Rustenburg, Eli Brouwer and Pieter van Veen were the best performing after finishing first in heat one.

Ralf Rienks, Mick Makker, Michiel Mantek and Rik Rienks came second in heat two after falling short against China’s Li Wenlei, Chen Xianfeng, Xu Qiao and Cai Pengpeng.

A similar story was repeated in heat three with Bjorn van den Ende, Ruben Knab, Sander de Graaf and Nelson Ritsema being second-best to Britain’s William Stewart, Morgan Bolding, Leonard Jenkins and Frederick Davidson.

China’s Zhou Jiaqi and Qiu Xiuping were successful in heat one of the lightweight women’s double sculls while Britain’s Emily Craig and Madeleine Fiona Arlett were victorious in heat two.

Igor Khmara and Stanislav Kovalov of Ukraine, Jan Schaeuble and Raphael Ahmuda Ireland of Switzerland and Jiří Šimánek and Miroslav Vrastil of Czech Republic were all ranked first in the men’s lightweight double sculls.
