Tokyo 2020 BMX freestyle champion Logan Martin has credited his career to the International Extreme Sports Festival (FISE), saying his success would not have been possible without the event which is taking place here.

The 28-year-old began his professional career a decade ago at the 2012 FISE World Series, also in Montpellier, where he finished first in the men's freestyle BMX event.

The triumph sent Martin on a pathway to winning the historic gold medal in Japan last year.

"FISE was amazing for freestyle BMX," Martin said at the Urban Sports Summit which is running alongside FISE and aims to bring together key stakeholders in urban sports to collectively further their growth.

"We didn't have an event like this.

"We didn't get to travel and do any World Series so that was big for the sport.

"Then in 2017, FISE partnered with the International Cycling Union and announced that BMX was going to become an Olympic sport.

"My next dream was to win an Olympic gold medal, and I did that, but it would not have been without the FISE guys who started my career in Montpellier at these events."

Hurricane, the organiser of FISE, which has reached its 25th year, are continuing to invest in the event in the hopes of finding the next Martin and further developing all urban sports, not just BMX, such as skateboarding, scooter and parkour.

"This is just the beginning of urban and action sports' huge story," said FISE founder Hervé André-Benoît, who is also chief executive of Hurricane.

"Paris 2024 will show our sports in the perfect light, showcasing them in the beautiful city.

"I am convinced that the Games will give a huge impact to action sport.

"My main goal is to give more exposure, generate more money, make more stars like Logan and propel them to the same level of popularity as the likes of football and tennis players."
