International University Sports Federation (FISU) Acting President Leonz Eder has met with the International Boxing Association (IBA) and Turkish University Sports Federation (TUSF) officials, following the country's decision to step in as host for FISU combat sports and 3x3 basketball events.

Mehmet Günay, President of the TUSF, and Kemal Tamer, his predecessor and an FISU Executive Committee member, met with Eder during the Women's World Boxing Championships in Istanbul last week.

Eder also met Turkish Minister of Youth and Sports Mehmet Muharrem Kasapoglu and IBA representatives.

Günay thanked Kasapoglu for his continuous support for TUSF activities and FISU events in Turkey, reiterating the importance of organising events such as the FISU University World Cup Combat Sports in Samsun and the FISU University World Cup 3x3 Basketball in Istanbul later this year.

Initially, Xiamen in China was to hold the 3x3 basketball competition, while Russian city Yekaterinburg was the original host for the University World Cup Combat Sports.

China relinquished hosting rights due to ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, while Russia was stripped of the rights following the nation's invasion of Ukraine.

Both Kasapoglu and Günay confirmed Turkey was keen to hold more FISU events in future.

"Turkey has been playing a major role in FISU for many years," said Eder.

"We are grateful for the readiness of TUSF to support FISU, especially in the current difficult period."

FISU and the IBA recently renewed a Memorandum of Understanding.
