Busenaz Sürmeneli defended her under-66kg title successfully on the final day of the International Boxing Association Women's World Boxing Championships, becoming one of four Turkish winners on home soil in Istanbul.

Sürmeneli, who was the Olympic and world champion coming into her final bout against Charlie Cavanagh, was one of the clear favourites to win gold at the competition and the biggest hope for the home fans.

She duly delivered, causing the Canadian to be counted on three occasions - with the last one ending with a referee's stoppage in the final round.

On the podium with the pair were the bronze medallists, Ichrak Chaib of Algeria and Janjaem Suwannapheng from Thailand.

Olympic silver medallist Buse Naz Çakıroğlu no longer needs to call herself a world silver medallist after claiming the opening bout at under-50kg by unanimous decision against Colombia's Ingrit Valencia.

Çakıroğlu was stealthy as usual in her approach, attacking in flurries, having enough to beat the Rio 2016 Olympic bronze medallist.

Bronze went to Aziza Yokubova of Uzbekistan and Spain's Laura Fuentes.

Hatice Akbaş had followed her compatriot Çakıroğlu in the running order, and was able to claim the under-54kg title by a 3-2 split decision over Lacramioara Perijoc from Romania - a bout that could have been ruled in favour of either fighter, but went the way of the host nation.

Kazakhstan's Dina Zholaman and Preedakamon Tintabthai from Thailand completed the podium.

Şennur Demir completed the collection in the over-81kg category, claiming gold to add to her silver and bronze won before.

In a close bout, Demir knocked down Morocco's Khaija Mardi in the second round, but her opponent came back strong.

Despite a cool display in the third round, Mardi did not get her arm raised - instead, Demir finally won her first world title at 39 years old.

Rashida Ellis was able to topple the defending champion Beatriz Ferreira from Brazil to win the under-60kg gold medal.

The American, notably shorter than all of her opponents in the tournament, defeated Ferreira by a 3-2 split decision, utilising her punches well to get the verdict in her favour.

Boos rained down for the American following her victory, with members of the crowd giving her the middle finger as she walked to the mixed zone.

Bronze medals went to Alessia Mesiano of Italy and Kosovo's Donjeta Sadiku.

Finally, Tammara Thibeault of Canada won her first world title - improving on her 2019 bronze - by beating 2014 champion Atheyna Bylon of Panama by a 4-1 split.

Bronze medallists were Rady Gramane from Mozambique and France's Davina Michel.

Jennifer Huggins was named best referee of the tournament and Sürmeneli was named best boxer.
