The junior women's world number one Hadley Husisian of the United States crept into the International Fencing Federation (FIE) Grand Prix épée main draw, where she is set to face French Olympian Auriane Mallo.

As she was top seed in the preliminary rounds, Husisian was awarded a bye and moved straight into a crucial duel with Switzerland's Laura Staehli.

Staehli promised to be a stern test as she recorded a 25th-place finish at the Grand Prix in Qatar in January.

Husisian prevailed 15-14 at the Cairo Stadium Indoor Halls Complex to set up a round-of-64 clash with European team gold medallist Mallo.

Husisian is one of four Americans to be promoted into the main draw.

The US' Francesca Bassa beat Greece's Nikoletta Chatzisarantou 15-8 against the odds to secure a bout against Tokyo 2020 team champion Erika Kirpu of Estonia.

Anna van Brummen and Faith Park made up the rest of the successful American contingent as they secured 15-9 and 15-13 wins against Egypt's Lma Huzayen and Hina Hasui of Japan, respectively.

Georgia's Arina Korneeva beat Italian Alice Clerici 15-12 to gain entry into the main draw.

She is looking to record her best Grand Prix finish of the season, following 49th in Budapest last month.

Korneeva has been drawn against the tournament's 30th seed Kristina Kuusk of Estonia.

The 36-year-old defied expectations in March's Hungarian tournament to finish eighth and has been given the favourite's tag for the upcoming clash.

The competition is set to continue tomorrow in Cairo, with the winners of the men's and women's tournaments due to be crowned as the main draw is played out.
