France enjoyed a strong opening day of the International Fencing Federation Grand Prix in Cairo with six fencers advancing to the last 64 of the men’s épée contest.

Paul Allegre, Kendrick Jean-Joseph, Titouan Chotin, Alex Fava, Gaetan Billa and Nelson Lopez Pourtier all came through the qualification rounds in the Egyptian capital.

Jean-Joseph has secured a prize meeting with French Olympic champion Romain Cannone after beating Lee Seung-hyun of South Korea 15-14.

Billa will take on eighth seed Ruslan Kurbanov of Kazakhstan after overcoming Martin Capek of the Czech Republic 15-12.

Lopez Pourtier saw off Nicholas Lawson of the United States 15-11 to seal a last-64 clash with 28th seed Mohanad Shaban of Egypt.

Allegre will be faced the challenger of 15th seed Koki Kano of Japan after defeating Vitaliy Svystil of Ukraine 15-12, while Fava downed Hong Kong’s Wai Hang Ho to move through to the next round where he will take on 24th seed William East of Britain.

Chotin gave France another victory when he beat Kazakhstan’s Vadim Sharlaimov 15-10 and will now meet 14th seed Houssam Elkord of Morocco.

Two home players made it through the qualification round as Mohmoud Mohsen and Ahmed ElSayed triumphed.

Switzerland saw a hat-trick of qualifiers as Sven Vineis, Gabriel Bonferroni and Gabriel Bonferroni all advanced to the last 64.

Yeisser Ramirez, Stephen Ewart and Justin Yoo ensured the US had another three players in the competition heading into Sunday’s (May 1) final rounds.

Italian trio Filippo Armaleo, Simone Mencarelli and Enrico Piatti also advanced along with Japanese duo Ikou Furuta and Yohito Masuda, Czech pair Jiri Beran and Jakub Jurka and Germans Marco Brinkmann and Richard Schmidt.

The other qualifiers were Conrad Seibæk Kongstad of Denmark, Richard Grünhäuser of Brazil, Tristan Tulen of The Netherlands, Marc Housieaux of Belgium, Tibor Andrasfi of Hungary, Angel Fabregat of Spain, Son Tae-jin of South Korea and John Edison Rodriguez of Colombia.

Competition is due to continue tomorrow with the women’s qualification round.
