This tournament beginning tomorrow in Starlight Stadium is the penultimate round in the 2022 season and the 12 teams competing will be split into three pools.

In Pool A, the Australian leaders will be joined by Spain, Mexico and their Canadian hosts.

Pool B will see Ireland, France, Brazil and Japan face off.

Pool C featuring England, Fiji, the United States and Olympic champions New Zealand has been described by World Rugby as possibly the most competitive pool in competition history. 

Mexico and Japan join the line-up as invitational teams, having not competed in the rest of this year's Sevens Series.

New Zealand, the reigning world champions in addition to winning Olympic gold at Tokyo 2020, are making their first appearance of 2022, while Fiji will be appearing for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic began. 

Fiji will feature in the first game of the tournament against the US.

All teams will complete their three qualifying pool matches on day one, while the knockout games will be played on Sunday (May 1).

The series champion will be decided by an accumulation of points from each team’s best four events out of six, which means that Australia can clinch the title with a visit to the final this weekend.

Australia lead going into the weekend with 76 points after winning three of the four tournaments to date. 

In total, they have scored 653 points and conceded only 181 so far.

A win in Langford would see them take their first series title since 2018. 

Australia co-captain Demi Hayes said: "It’s been a few months since we played in Spain and we are really excited to kick off on Saturday. 

"We had a few preparation days yesterday and today, so we’re super stoked and can’t wait to play."

Australia will take on the Canadian hosts in the last game of day one in what is sure to be a competitive game. 

New Zealand, who are currently ranked last place in the Sevens Series, will also be looking for success this weekend.

New Zealand captain Sarah Hirini said: "The girls are going to be happy to be there - I’m sure there are going to be a bit of nerves but also probably a lot of excess energy to release this weekend."

The final tournament on the women’s circuit is due to take place in Toulouse from May 20 to 22.
