Italy and the United States won gold in the men's and women's junior team foil tournaments, respectively, at the Junior and Cadet Fencing World Championships at the Hamdan Sports Complex in Dubai.

Italy took victory with a dominant 45-28 win against France in the final led by Damiano Di Veroli in a 37-strong field of competitors.

France narrowly beat Hungary 45-42 in the semi-final while the eventual winners triumphed over Poland 45-30.

The Hungarians were awarded the bronze medal following a thrilling 45-41 triumph against Poland.

"It feels so amazing, I’ve been waiting for this moment for three days and maybe even for a lifetime," said Di Veroli.

"Today each touch was difficult, but we scored, many of them.

"Now it’s a memory!"

Out of 32 teams, the US stopped Italy from taking a clean sweep as they prevailed 45-33 in the women's final while Japan's 45-42 win against Ukraine saw them take bronze.

Both finalists progressed to the decider with ease, Italy beating Ukraine 45-24 and the US dispatching Japan 45-27.

"It feels great, amazing, it was a long day with some ups and downs," said US' Lauren Scruggs.

"We had a strong start against Sweden and that helped.

"We later had a rough beginning of our bout with Japan but got back on track with cheering and energy.

"Some of us had fenced three days in a row so that was tiring!"

The action is scheduled to continue tomorrow with both the junior men's and women's épée set to take place in the United Arab Emirates.
