World ranking leaders Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan of Qatar won the Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour Elite 16 tournament in Rosarito in Mexico.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympic bronze medallists gave no chance to the experienced Netherlands' Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen and managed to secure victory with a 21-17, 21-15 scoreline.

Cherif and Ahmed won their third international title as partners and the second consecutively in Mexico, following their victory at the Cancun Hub on the 2021 International Volleyball Federation World Tour.

The Qatari duo have now won 11 international beach volleyball medals, three golds, four silvers and four bronzes.

"It’s a great feeling to win the first Elite 16 tournament of the Beach Pro Tour," Cherif said.

"This tournament was so hard, every match felt like a final and it had Olympic level.

"It was another opportunity to prove we're one of the best.

"Mexico has been bringing great luck to us as we made it to the final three times last year in Cancun and now here.

"Rosarito will be forever in my heart."

Brouwer and Meeuwsen were the first Dutch pair to win an Olympic medal in the discipline of beach volleyball at Rio 2016.

After a dominating performance in Rosarito, Cherif and Ahmed will now rest before the start of the home challenge event in Doha.

In the bronze medal match, Norway’s Anders Berntsen Mol and Christian Sandlie Sørum defeated Polish Olympians Michal Bryl and Bartosz Losiak in the last two sets 12-21, 21-17, 15-12.

The Norwegians won 14 golds, two silvers and three bronzes in 36 international tournaments as partners.

"We feel great," Mol said.

"There are so many great teams in the Elite 16 tournaments and making it to the semi-finals makes us feel good.

"Winning a medal after being so far behind in the first set was incredible.

"We were in a really dark place but we managed to fight back and it feels really good."

Among the women, Dutch pair Raisa Schoon and Katja Stam claimed the title with a straight sets 21-14, 21-13 victory over Latvians Tina Graudina and Anastasija Kravcenoka and become the first winners of an Elite 16 event of the Beach Pro Tour.

"It’s amazing, I can’t even describe how I feel," Stam said.

"I think the main difference between last week's event and this one was that in Tlaxcala we were somewhat happy with being the final and weren't as aggressive as today.

"This time we just kept going.

"It's what we wanted and I'm glad and proud that we did it.

"To see that we could perform at this level in the final of an Elite 16, it's really amazing."

Schoon and Stam also won silver at the Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour Challenge event in Tlaxcala after being defeated by the Brazilians Barbara Seixas and Carol Salgado last Sunday (March 20).

Graudina and Kravcenoka have won their first international beach volleyball medal as partners as they had finished fourth three times last year, including at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

While in the bronze medal match, Brazilian Olympians Talita Antunes and Rebecca Cavalcanti triumphed for the first time since they started their partnership last year.

Antunes and Cavalcanti have met with Americans Kelly Claes and Betsi Flint for the second time in Rosarito and managed to secure a 22-20, 21-19 victory.

"We’re feeling great," Antunes said.

"We’ve prepared for such a long time for this tournament.

"It was a tough tournament as we started in the qualifier, which is always difficult, but we did it.

"We had a lot of patience to deal with our ups and downs.

"We’ll celebrate a bit but we don’t have much time because we’ll be back on the court on the Brazilian Tour next week."

The Beach Pro Tour is set to continue next week, with a Future event in Coolangatta in Australia scheduled from March 30 to April 3.

Next stop will be the Challenge tournament at the iconic beach Ipanema located in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil from April 14 to 17 and from May 5 to 8 in Doha, Qatar.

Additionally, the next Elite 16 tournament of the season will take place in Ostrava in Czech Republic, from May 25 to 29.
