With Ashleigh Barty announcing her shock retirement at the age of just 25 earlier this week, Świątek will now take her place at the top of the world rankings on April 4 when the Australian’s name will be removed from the standings.

Świątek, who was crowned French Open champion in 2020, needed to beat Switzerland’s Viktorija Golubic to guarantee number one spot and she did so in emphatic fashion.

The 20-year-old dropped just two games in a 6-2, 6-0 thrashing at the Hard Rock Stadium in the American city.

It extends her winning run to 12 matches, including Women’s Tennis Association titles at Doha and Indian Wells.

"I never really imagined that moment because, truth to be told, I was working day-by-day and playing tennis well," said Świątek.

"But I never had the strong belief that it can actually happen so it’s even more surreal for me.

"I loved every moment of it.

"It doesn’t matter for me if there were fireworks.

"The crowd was really supportive, they were really excited.

"I’m just soaking everything in because I didn’t have any expectations."

Spanish fifth seed Paula Badosa also advanced to the third round with a straight sets victory, defeating Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic 7-5, 7-5.

Yesterday’s action saw a large portion of the women’s 32 seeds crash out of the tournament and more followed today.

Beatriz Haddad Maia of Brazil stunned fourth seed Maria Sakkari of Greece 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 in the second round in Miami.

The world number 62 registered her third top five victory of her career as she secured a third-round match against Ukraine’s Anhelina Kalinina who pulled off an upset of her own, defeating 26th seed Madison Keys of the United States 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Tenth seed Jeļena Ostapenko of Latvia also fell at the second-round stage, losing 6-3, 7-6 to American Shelby Rogers.

One of the performances of the day came from 16-year-old wildcard Linda Fruhvirtova of the Czech Republic.

The world number 279 underlined her burgeoning talent with a 7-5, 2-6, 6-1 victory over 24th seed Elise Mertens of Belgium.

"I never played against a top 25 player, and it's unbelievable," said Fruhvirtova.

"I worked really hard for this and I’m enjoying it."

Other women’s seeds to lose were Sorena Cirstea of Romania and Russian Liudmila Samsonova who was competing as a neutral.

Another Russian playing under neutral status following the country’s ban in response to the war in Ukraine was Andrey Rublev.

The fifth seed has been in superb form this season but he slumped to a heavy defeat to Nick Kyrgios of Australia in the second round.

Kyrgios, who has slipped outside the world’s top 100, took just 52 minutes to complete a 6-3, 6-0 demolition job against Rublev.

"I know that he's a player who relies on a bit of rhythm, so I just tried to keep the points short and sharp, just play aggressive," Kyrgios said.

"I'm just happy with my performance, whether it's 7-6 in the third or something like this, I'm just happy to get through."

Kyrgios will be joined in the third round by his compatriot Thanasi Kokkinakis who stunned Argentina’s 13th seed Diego Schwartzman 4-6, 7-6, 6-4.

Second seed Alexander Zverev of Germany was forced to dig deep to overcome Croatia’s Borna Coric 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.

Italy’s Jannik Sinner, seeded ninth, also had a battle on his hands as he outlasted Finland’s Emil Ruusuvuori 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 in a three-set thriller.

Sixth seed Casper Ruud of Norway took little time to dispatch Switzerland’s Henri Laaksonen, while Spain’s 17th seed Pablo Carreno Busta swept aside former top 10 player David Goffin of Belgium 6-3, 6-2.

Frances Tiafoe triumphed 3-6, 7-6, 6-4 in an all-American battle with Brandon Nakashima, while Britain’s 10th seed Cameron Norrie beat compatriot Jack Draper 7-6, 6-4.
