Kelly Claes and Betsi Flint of the United States enjoyed a dominant start on the opening day of the main draw of the Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour Elite 16 tournament taking place in Rosarito in Mexico. 

The Americans secured victory by a 21-13, 21-15 scoreline over Swiss pair Joana Heidrich and Anouk Vergé-Dépré and returned to the court to face the Brazilians Maria Antonelli and Fernanda Alves with another 21-15, 24-22 win.

"We just wanted to go on the court together," said Claes.

"We had a few scrimmages, but it’s really fun to get out and compete.

"It’s a totally different energy than practice.

"It was awesome to be on the court with Betsi and fight together."

Brazilian duo Rebecca Cavalcanti and Talita Antunes prevailed over compatriots Maria Antonelli and Fernanda Alves 21-13, 21-19.

The winners of the 2014 Youth Olympics Eduarda Lisboa or "Duda" and Ana Patricia Ramos of Brazil defeated compatriots Bárbara Seixas and Carol Salgado 21-17, 21-16 in their first match as partners. 

"The first matches of the season are always difficult because the only way to get in competition rhythm is to play," Duda said.

"We had some camps and scrimmages, but being on the court for a real match brings a lot of feelings and we're still figuring out how to handle them together. 

"We prepared well and it was great to have a good start to our team today."

The duo repeated the two-set 21-15, 21-17 win against Latvian Olympic semi-finalists Tina Graudina and Anastasija Kravcenoka later on.

Germans Cinja Tillmann and Svenja Muller started with a three-set 21-19, 23-25, 15-10 win against Graudina and Kravcenoka of Latvia, but failed in their second match as Seixas and Salgado rebounded securing a 21-19, 22-20 victory. 

In the meantime, April Ross and new partner Emily Day of the United States had a powerful display against Tanja Huberli and Nina Brunner of Switzerland and convinced in a 13-21, 21-19, 15-7 triumph.  

Americans Sara Hughes and Kelley Kolinske defeated compatriots Sarah Sponcil and Terese Cannon in straight sets 21-17, 21-17. 

World champions Sarah Pavan and Melissa Humana-Paredes of Canada managed to secure a 21-15, 21-14 victory against Mexicans Atenas Gutierrez and Maria Quinteros, while Raisa Schoon and Katja Stam of the Netherlands beat Tokyo 2020 Olympic silver medallists Taliqua Clancy and Mariafe Artacho of Australia with a 21-18, 9-21, 15-12 win.

Among the men, Rio 2016 Olympic bronze medallists Dutchman Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen secured a three-set 16-21, 21-11, 16-14 victory over the new Italian team of Paolo Nicolai and Samuele Cottafava.

Anders Berntsen Mol and Christian Sandlie Sørum of Norway beat Americans Tri Bourne and Trevor Crabb in two sets 21-18, 21-18, but were defeated by Brouwer and Meeuwsen in straight sets 21-17, 21-16. 

Bourne and Crabb defeated Nicolai and Cottafava in two sets 24-22, 21-18 to finally celebrate their first win in Rosarito.

Alison Cerutti and Gustavo Carvalhaes of Brazil defeated Czech Olympians Ondrej Perusic and David Schweiner 21-18, 21-17 in their first match and continued to shine when they beat the Mexican top team of Jose Rubio and Josue Gaxiola also in two sets 21-19, 21-14. 

"We had a lot of patience," Cerutti said. 

"The Mexicans played very differently from the last time I had faced them and we had to adjust and change our strategy at times. 

"I feel like we’re in a better rhythm now than we were last week in Tlaxcala and I’m confident we’ll continue to grow the more we play."

Dutch players Stefan Boermans and Yorick de Groot defeated Rubio and Gaxiola 21-19, 16-21, 15-10, but fell to Perusic and Schweiner 21-19, 21-11. 

World ranking leaders Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan of Qatar beat Brazilians Evandro Goncalves and Alvaro Filho with a scoreline of 21-17, 18-21, 15-12, while Polish team Michal Bryl and Bartosz Losiak prevailed over Austrian Robin Seidl and Philipp Waller in two sets 21-14, 21-17. 

The Brazilians Andre Loyola and George Wanderley triumphed against Latvian veterans Aleksandrs Samoilovs and Janis Smedins 24-22, 21-8. 

Enrico Rossi and Adrian Ignacio Carambula of Italy dominated American qualifiers Theo Brunner and Chaim Schalk in two sets 21-14, 21-14. 

The quarter-finals and semi-finals will be played on Saturday (March 26) while the medal matches are scheduled for Sunday (March 27).
