"I’m really surprised that I managed to win against such a good player like Timo Boll and I’m still feeling quite shocked, but I’m sure this will give me the confidence to do well in my next few matches as well," Uda said.

"It’s the Infinity Arena, it’s Table 1, I was playing against Timo Ball and there were also spectators watching - the environment is good for the players to play in and overall I’m just happy that I managed to win the match.

"I’m just going to bring my performance and form from today to tomorrow and hope to get a win again."

In the women’s singles, Olympic champion Chen Meng and Wang Yidi advanced to the next round, 

Among men, world number one Fan Zhendong and world number 10 Xu Xin are also through to the next round.   

Fan earned an 11-8, 11-6, 13-11 win over Masataka Morizono of Japan while Xin beat Jon Persson of Sweden 11-9, 16-14, 11-6.

Austrian pair of Daniel Habesohn and Robert Gardos beat Sweden's Mattias Falck and Kristian Karlsson by 11-3, 5-11, 11-5, 6-11, 11-4 in the round of 16.

Women’s doubles pair Wang Manyu and Sun Yingsha and men’s doubles duo of Fan Zhendong and Wang Chuqin won as well, with Wang Chuqin and Sun Yingsha also winners in the mixed doubles.

Additionally, the Singapore-based non-profit organisation "Table Tennis 4 Good" was able to display their programmes at the Singapore Smash Zone.

The organisation aims to use table tennis to "promote overall health, rehabilitation and harmony while having fun playing the sport."
