Falun is set to host the final events of the International Ski Federation (FIS) Cross-Country World Cup season, which has been curtailed early following the war in Ukraine.

The Swedish resort had been scheduled to host two races before the FIS World Cup Finals in Tyumen, but the event in Russia was cancelled after the nation began its invasion of Ukraine.

The early end of the season has confirmed Norway’s Johannes Høsflot Klæbo and Russia’s Natalya Nepryayeva as the overall men’s and women’s World Cup winners respectively, with neither able to be caught at the top of the overall standings.

Nepryayeva is expected to receive the World Cup Crystal Globe at a latter date, even though the FIS has banned Russian athletes competing following their country's invasion of Ukraine.

Klæbo’s participation in Falun has been in doubt with the five-time Olympic champion recovering from COVID-19.

He is not included on the official list of Norwegian skiers competing at the event, although the National Ski Association revealed he could still be added to their team.

Klæbo is currently also the leader in the men’s sprint classification, but could relinquish his lead to France’s Richard Jouve with the 10th and final event taking place tomorrow.

Jouve won the classic sprint event in Klæbo’s absence last week in Drammen.

The men’s distance title is due to be decided on Saturday (March 12), with the 15km event in Falun bringing the season to a close.

Finland’s Iivo Niskanen leads the distance classification from Russia’s Alexander Bolshunov and Klæbo, with the former unable to compete.

The World Cup will also bring four-time Olympic gold medallist Therese Johaug’s career to a conclusion.

Johaug had announced last week’s races in Oslo would be the final competitions of her career, but has now opted to compete in Falun.

She will be crowned women’s distance champion after the 10km event on Saturday (March 12).

Tomorrow is scheduled to see the women’s sprint competition contested, where Sweden’s Maja Dahlqvist is already confirmed as the champion and will receive her Crystal Globe in front of a home crowd.

A mixed relay competition is also due to be held on Sunday (March 13).
