Switzerland’s Nicolas Mueller sprung a big upset in the quarter-finals of the Optasia Championship, as the unseeded player’s fairytale run continued at the Professional Squash Association (PSA) World Tour Gold event.

Mueller defeated seventh seed Gregoire Marche of France in round two and added another scalp to his list when he beat Marwan ElShorbagy of Egypt, the fourth seed.

Mueller came from behind at the Wimbledon Club in London, triumphing 8-11, 11-9, 11-5, 11-6 in 44 minutes to defeat ElShorbagy for the first time since the 2013 World Championship.

Mueller said he had "goosebumps" after the victory, describing it as "one of my better wins in my career."

He will now face the ultimate challenge in the last four with top seed Ali Farag of Egypt lying in wait.

Farag triumphed comfortably against Joel Makin of Wales 11-9, 11-7, 11-3, earning revenge for Makin’s straight-games win against him at last year’s US Open.

In the other half of the draw, third seed Diego Elías of Peru triumphed in the game of the day against sixth seed Mazen Hesham of Egypt.

Elías was forced to save three match balls in a contest that went the distance, coming from a game down to win 9-11, 11-7, 11-6, 4-11, 12-10 in a match that lasted 63 minutes.

He will face second seed Mohamed ElShorbagy of Egypt in the last four, after he ran out a convincing winner against compatriot Karim Abdel Gawad, the eighth seed.

The match was a repeat of one from the 2019 edition of this event, then known as the Channel VAS Championship and hosted at the St George's Hill Lawn Tennis Club.

On that occasion Gawad won in five games, but this time ElShorbagy triumphed 11-6, 11-4, 11-4, in 29 minutes.

The semi-finals are scheduled to take place tomorrow.
