Youssef Ibrahim beat fellow Egyptian Mohamed ElShorbagy at the Windy City Open in Chicago, coming back from two games down to reach the quarter-finals.

Ibrahim made it three wins from three against the third seed as he saved two match points on his way to the 8-11, 9-11, 11-9, 13-11, 11-6 victory.

ElShorbagy had suffered defeat at the hands of Ibrahim at the 2020 and 2021 Qatar Classic, but went into this match in good form having won the Squash on Fire Open title last week.

Yet Ibrahim against proved too tricky a proposition.

"What a week," 22-year-old Ibrahim said.

"I’m playing one of the best players in the history of the game and it’s such an honour to be on court with Mohamed.

"I knew it would be such a tough game and he did everything he could to win.

"I got caught in the first two games, but I stayed calm and I tried to stay with him in the third and with every game being so close it was so mental."

Ibrahim is set to face Iker Pajares Bernabeu in the next round after he became just the third Spanish player to reach the quarter- finals of a Professional Squash Association Platinum event.

Pajares downed Mexico's Cesar Salazar 11-6, 6-11, 11-4, 10-12, 11-8.

ElShorbagy's brother, Marwan, also advanced with a straight-games win over the United States' number two Todd Harrity and will meet world number one Ali Farag of Egypt next in the tie of the round.

In the women's event, all four matches went to the seeded players.

Defending champion Nour El Sherbini of Egypt is set to face countrywoman Rowan Elaraby after she got the better of Belgium's Tinne Gilis in a five-game thriller, while Elaraby beat South African Alexandra Fuller in three games.

"To win this match I had to really dig deep," said El Sherbini.

"She was playing so well and getting everything back, it was an amazing match and I’m really happy to be through, these matches give you confidence and belief."

Third-seeded Egyptian Hania El Hammamy progressed as her opponent Mariam Metwally, also of Egypt, was forced to retire through injury.

Compatriot Salma Hany awaits in the next round after a straight-games win against Egypt's Nadine Shahin.
