Stephen Clegg of Britain was just 0.05sec off breaking the S12 world record in the men's 100 metres butterfly but nevertheless still took home the gold medal in the multi-classification race.

The three-time Paralympic medallist finished in a time of 56.80. giving him 997 points.

The result meant he beat Iceland's Robert Isak Jonsson by 232 points after he posted a time of 59.54.

Clegg's compatriot James Hollis rounded out the top three with 740 points from a time of 59.86.

"I'm absolutely thrilled with that," said Clegg.

"I've been saying all the way through that I've not done that much training going into this meet, it's been more about the mental preparation and mental well-being after Tokyo."

Poppy Maskill led an all-British podium to secure gold in the women's 100m butterfly final with a time of 1min 9.45sec and 767 points.

Toni Shaw was quicker at 1:08.41 but her points total of 761 meant she had to settle for silver, while Brock Whiston won bronze, clocking in after 1:17.02 for 694 points.

"I'm really happy with that," said Maskill.

"Beforehand, it was a bit of a mixture of both excitement and nerves.

"Racing against athletes from around the world has been really cool this week."

Germany's Justin Kaps put a stop to the British dominance with a 26.09 and 699-point performance to win gold in the men's 50m freestyle.

Britain's Kieran Williams and William Perry followed in second and third, respectively.

Williams finished after 26.38 to gain 676 points while Perry's 32.84 time saw him pick up 658 points.

Kaps' countrywoman Tanja Scholz picked up victory in the women's 50m freestyle after 38.36 and 962 points, ahead of Britain's Hannah Russell with 851 points from a 28.19 swim and Canadian Arianna Hunsicker who posted a time of 29.10 for 832 points.

A Para Swimming World Series event also took place in Melbourne today, with Australians winning every gold medal.

In the women's events, Emily Beecroft was triumphant in the 50m butterfly, Hannah Price in the 50m backstroke, Keira Stephens in the 200m medley and Ruby Storm in the 200m freestyle.

Meanwhile in the men's races, Jarred Dyer was victorious in the 50m butterfly, Jesse Aungles in the 50m backstroke, Tim Hodge in the 200m medley, Ahmed Kelly in the 150m medley and Ben Hance in the 200m freestyle.
