A television deal with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) to transmit the 2022 Mediterranean Games in Oran and the 2023 Mediterranean Beach Games in Heraklion has been hailed as "pioneering" by the International Committee of Mediterranean Games (CIJM).

The EBU has acquired worldwide rights to distribute and broadcast the Mediterranean Games under the deal.

"It is the first time in the history of the International Committee of the Mediterranean Games that the media rights are being centralised and commercialised," CIJM President Davide Tizzano said.

"Undoubtedly, this will be a great opportunity to promote our Games and make them more popular with the youth worldwide and highlight their importance in the sports world and strengthen even further our relation with our member NOCs [National Olympic Committees] and the Organising Committees," he added.

"I am very excited about this collaboration with the world’s leading alliance of public service media and I want to thank EBU for its support and for the confidence shown."

Algerian broadcaster EPTV is expected to play a leading role in broadcasting the Games in Oran which are set to begin on June 25.

Eight EBU members have already confirmed that they will broadcast the Games.

They are set to be transmitted in Albania, Andorra, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cyprus, France, Greece, Portugal and Turkey.

"Working with the CIJM in order to increase the profile of the Mediterranean Games via the EBU members' television, radio and online platforms was an opportunity we could not miss," Andreas Aristodemou, head of summer sports rights at Eurovision Sport, said.

"A key parameter for the EBU is the fact that the Mediterranean Games is a unique multi-sport event that brings together athletes from European, African and Asian countries and this allows us to involve all our Mediterranean members."
