The International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) World Championships are planned to take place from November 16 to 27 in Dubai, the organisation has announced.

The Emirati city is expected to welcome more than 300 athletes from 16 men's and 12 women's teams for 12 days of competition.

The dates were confirmed following a lengthy decision process between host organisers and the IWBF Competition Commission.

"We are pleased to be able to confirm the dates of the 2022 IWBF World Championships for later this year," IWBF President Ulf Mehrens said.

"We continue to work with the hosts UAE to ensure we will be able to put on a world-class event as the ultimate showcase for wheelchair basketball and Paralympic sport and provide the highest-level environment for our elite players."

Despite concerns over the coronavirus pandemic, organisers are determined for the event to go ahead.

"It’s a very proud moment for UAE and Dubai to host such a prestigious event," said Thani Juma Berregad, chairman of the Dubai Club for People of Determination.

"The Wheelchair Basketball World Championships is the second marquee event that Dubai will host this year, kicked off by the World Para Archery Championships in February 2022.

"With all precautionary measures in place, we are confident of hosting a successful competition with world-class facilities on display.

"We aim to make it a memorable event for all participating teams."

Qualification tournaments for the World Championships began in December with the European Championships in Madrid.

The Africa Championships recently concluded in Ethiopia.

The remaining qualifying events are scheduled to take place in the upcoming months, beginning with the Asia-Oceania Championships in March and then the Americas Cup in July.
