Women's doubles luge world champions are due to be crowned for the first time ever in Winterberg this weekend.

The venue is staging the historic first alongside the International Luge Federation (FIL) Junior World Championships, in which competition is set to begin tomorrow.

The winter resort town in Germany is geared for more than 50 young athletes from 18 countries to compete for five sets of FIL Junior World Championship medals.

Junior men’s singles, junior women’s singles, junior men’s doubles, junior women’s singles and team medals will be on offer.

Competing athletes are expected to be aged between 21 and 19, and were able to complete preliminary runs today.

Russia's Diana Loginova in the women’s singles had the quickest time, followed by Canada’s Caitlin Nash who was 0.039sec back.

Germany’s David Nößler was the quickest for the men’s singles preliminary run.

Competitive action begins with the men's singles tomorrow, followed by the women's doubles.

Women's singles, men's doubles and the team event are due up the next day, before the senior women's doubles event wraps up competition on Sunday (January 29).

Germany's Jessica Degenhardt and Cheyenne Rosenthal have been tipped for success, with Degenhardt having already won a Youth Olympic gold medal in the discipline.
