Olympic gymnast Lim Heem Wei has been named as Singapore's Chef de Mission for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Her appointment was confirmed by Commonwealth Games Singapore as the Queen's Baton Relay began its three-day tour around the city state.

Thirty-two-year-old Lim, who represented her country at London 2012, will be assisted by former national sprinter Amirudin Jamal.

She is now a national coach of Singapore's women's artistic gymnastics team and makes the step up from being deputy Chef de Mission under Mark Chay at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Lim's London 2012 appearance was a historic one as she became the first gymnast from Singapore to compete at the Olympic Games.

Her career also included two appearances at the Commonwealth Games, where she won a silver medal on the beam at Delhi 2010.

Since 2018, the three-time Southeast Asian Games champion has served on the Commonwealth Games Federation's Athletes' Advisory Commission, representing Asia.

"The 2010 and 2014 Commonwealth Games were defining moments in my career as an athlete," said Lim.

"Being able to return to the Games as Chef de Mission is a tremendous privilege.

"I wish all athletes who are aiming to qualify for the Games all the best and look forward to working with them and their respective national sports associations in their preparations.

"I am also very pleased to have the support of Amirudin, my fellow Team Singapore team mate who was in the same 2010 and 2014 Commonwealth Games contingent."

Singapore won five gold medals, two silvers and two bronzes at Gold Coast 2018.

Birmingham 2022 will run between July 28 and August 8.
