Canadian Chef de Mission for the Beijing 2022 Paralympics Josh Dueck has said the team's mantra is more than the sport itself, stating that Canadian athletes need to go beyond medals and focus on success in a variety of ways.

Dueck, who is to be backed by assistant Chef de Mission Karolina Wisniewska at the Games, said it was a great opportunity to inspire, even when not on the podium.

"The general ethos that we've built for the team is to elevate, motivate, unite," said Dueck to Canadian Press.

"[Sport] is a light that brings hope in the darkness and we all need that sort of light, I think that provides a stronger intrinsic motivation to these athletes who are training beyond just medals.

"This is a great opportunity to do something bigger than ourselves and bigger than sport."

At Pyeongchang 2018, Canada claimed its highest medal tally at a Winter Paralympic Games, winning 28 - eight golds, four silvers and 16 bronzes.

"The advice that I've given [athletes] and that I'll continue to give as it's day to day, is we need to plant our feet on the ground each and every day, and give thanks for the opportunity that we have in front of us," added Dueck.

"If we're able to achieve that milestone that we've been working towards for the last four years, then that's going to be an incredible bonus.

"The privilege and opportunity that we have to still focus on sport when we're all very aware, none of us are blind to the fact that the world's on fire, it’s a troubling time...so hopefully that extrinsic and intrinsic motivation will carry the team through."

Dueck is an Alpine skier and three-time Paralympic medallist, including a gold medallist in the men's sitting combined from Sochi 2014.

The Beijing 2022 Paralympics are scheduled to take place from March 4 to 13.
