Mikaela Shiffrin won a record-breaking 47th slalom event in what was the first women's International Ski Federation (FIS) Alpine Ski World Cup event at Schladming for 10 years.

The American secured her fourth gold medal of the 2021-2022 season in Austria with a total time of 1min 32.66sec on the Planai course.

Shiffrin was previously tied with Sweden's Ingemar Stenmark on 46 career slalom victories.

She clocked in with 45.70 after a disappointing first run which saw her place fifth overall but a time of 46.96 from run two meant that she climbed to the top of the leaderboard to deny season rival Petra Vlhová of Slovakia a sixth gold medal.

Vlhová finished after 1:32.81, just 0.15 slower, and looked irritated with her second run performance which was the fifth-fastest in contrast to her leading time on the opener.

Germany's Lena Duerr rounded out the top three with times of 45.55 and 48.04 for a overall finish time of 1:33.59.

The result means that Shiffrin has slightly increased her lead at the top of the overall World Cup standings.

The double-Olympic champion has 966 points while Vlhová is close behind on 911 after the 20th event of the 37-strong season.

Italy's Sofia Goggia currently occupies third place with 657 points.

Today's competition was originally scheduled to take place in Flachau, also in Austria, but was moved due to an outbreak of COVID-19 in the resort.

Athletes will remain in Austria as the circuit stays in the country for the next event in Zauchensee on January 15 and 16 - a downhill and Super-G doubleheader.
