Philipp Schulze Topphoff eased to victory on his International Equestrian Federation (FEI) Jumping World Cup debut in La Coruña with his 11-year-old mare Concordess NRW.

The Spanish city played host to the fifth leg of the Western European League as the 23-year-old German completed the jump-off course in 37.69 seconds to claim the €99,000 (£84,300/$111,736) prize.

Finishing 0.09sec behind was Frenchman Gregory Cottard in second while Sweden's Angelica Augustsson-Zanotelli secured bronze after 38.39.

Schulze Topphoff produced the first run of the contest and made light work of the course.

He cleared every obstacle in a flawless display to set the bar high for the rest of the field.

There wouldn’t be another clear run until The Netherlands' Marc Houtzager entered the arena some 10 riders later.

Augustsson-Zanotelli was the third rider to go clear.

After the halfway point, clears were added by Cottard, Ireland's Michael Pender, Eduardo Pereira De Menezes of Brazil, and Belgian Jos Verlooy, sending a total of seven riders through to the jump-off.

Schulze Topphoff ruled the jump-off and was untouchable in pursuit of victory.

"She always has her own ideas - sometimes she works with me but sometimes I have to go her way, but she’s always really fighting for me, she has a really powerful character!" Topphoff said.

Ireland's Denis Lynch sits atop the overall standings going into the event, but he was unable to extend his lead after knocking over two poles condemned him to 30th place as he crossed the line in 73.13sec.
