The men’s K44 under-70 kilograms final saw a repeat of the Tokyo 2020 gold-medal contest between Mexico’s Juan Garcia and Iran’s Mahdi Pourrahnama.

Garcia triumphed in the Japanese capital when the event was a 75kg competition, but Pourrahnama avenged his defeat in Istanbul.

Pourrahnama earned a 3-0 victory in the final to be crowned world champion.

Hamed Haghshenas secured Iran’s second title of the day, triumphing in the K44 over-80kg division.

Haghshenas’ contest with Croatia’s Ivan Mikulic ended level at 5-5, but the Iranian was confirmed as the winner after an additional period.

The Russian Taekwondo Union (RTU) saw their representatives Magomedzagir Isaldibirov and Viktor Alexandrov secure titles.

Isaldibirov secured a 10-2 win over Britain’s Joseph Lane in the K44 under-80kg final, while Alexandrov overcame India’s Chandeep Singh 7-2 in the K41 over-80kg gold-medal match.

There was disappointment for the RTU’s Valeri Bazin in the K41 under-80kg final.

Bazin was beaten 41-39 by Kazakhstan’s Malik Mukashev.

Tokyo 2020 Paralympic champion Guljonoy Naimova of Uzbekistan won the women’s K44 over-65kg final.

Naimova earned a 21-11 win over Britain’s Amy Truesdale, who won bronze at Tokyo 2020.

Turkey’s Er Secil delivered home success in the women’s under-65kg competition, winning the K44 final by a 12-1 margin against Brazil’s Leylianne Ramos dos Santos.

Yesterday saw Mongolia’s Bolor-Erdene Ganbat secure a fifth world title in the men’s under-63kg K44 category, while Aasif Yasur became Israel’s maiden Para taekwondo world champion by winning the K41 under-58kg event.

Brazil’s Silvana Cardoso beat Turkey’s Gamze Gurdal 15-12 in the women’s under-57kg final.

Thailand’s Khwansuda Phuangkitcha was crowned world champion for the second time in the women’s under-47kg event.

Paralympic silver medallist Meryem Cavdar of Turkey became the inaugural world champion in the women’s under-52kg division.
