Defending champion Magnus Carlsen extended his lead over challenger Ian Nepomniachtchi after winning the eighth game of the World Chess Championship final in Dubai.

Carlsen, playing with the white pieces, has a 5-3 advantage in the series after taking victory today.

It is the Norwegian's second win in the last three matches of the final following a run of five straight draws.

Russian Nepomniachtchi resigned after 46 moves to leave Carlsen on the brink of retaining his world title.

Carlsen had claimed victory in the longest game in World Chess Championship history on Friday (December 3).

He emerged triumphant in a match that lasted 136 moves and eight hours, before yesterday's contest was drawn.

"It was pretty cagey at the start (of the match)," said Carlsen.

"Obviously a win changes the dynamic of the match.

"I don’t think I would have won this game if I hadn’t won the first one."

Tomorrow is a rest day before the final resumes on Tuesday (December 7).
