Oksana Masters earned victory on the opening day of the World Para Nordic Skiing World Cup season in Canmore.

The double Pyeongchang 2018 gold medallist earned a dominant victory in the women’s sitting sprint event at the Canadian venue.

Masters completed the event in a time of 14min 34.5sec to win the first race of the Winter Paralympic season.

The American will hope to win Paralympic titles across two different sports in a matter of months, having won double Para cycling gold at Tokyo 2020.

Her compatriot Kendall Gretsch was her closest challenger in the cross-country sprint event today, finishing second in a factored time of 15:18.4.

Russia’s Natalia Kocherova completed the podium, achieving a time of 15:57.3.

Italy’s Giuseppe Romele emerged as the winner of the men’s sitting competition, having crossed the line in 14:00.01.

His factored time of 13:01.3 was enough to top the standings.

Romele is a former Para swimmer, who turned to Nordic skiing after being left off his country's team for the Rio 2016 Paralympics.

Russia’s Ivan Golubkov was the runner-up in 13:11.3, with third going to compatriot Danila Britik, who achieved a real-time of 15:35.5.

Britik’s factored time of 13:33.9 secured him the podium spot.

The women’s standing event ended in a tie, with Natalie Wilkie and team-mate Brittany Hudak finishing in a time of 14:59.5.

Russia’s Ekaterina Rumyantseva completed the podium positions, ending in a factored time of 16:07.9.

Vladislav Lekomtsev led a Russian one-two in the men’s standing event, clocking 18:43.7 to Vitalii Malshev’s finishing time of 18:44.6.

Canada’s Mark Arendz placed third in 19:26.0.

Russia had the top eight finishers in the nine-woman visually impaired competition, with Anna Panferova winning in 15:10.3.

She was followed by Vera Khlyzova and Marina Galitsyna, who finished in 15:32.7 and 16:25.0 respectively.

Canada’s Brian McKeever secured victory in the men’s visually impaired event in 18:54.2.

Russia’s Oleg Ponomarev and Sweden’s Zebastian Modin completed the podium, finishing in times of 19:00.3 and 19:06.3.

More than 125 athletes have entered the World Cup, which includes racing in biathlon and cross-country.

The opening World Cup of the season will conclude on December 12.
