Sofia Goggia produced a blistering run to win the first women’s downhill event at the Alpine Ski World Cup in Lake Louise.

The Italian had topped the standings in the first training run on Tuesday (November 30), with weather conditions preventing the next two taking place.

Competition went ahead today with Goggia completing her run in a time of 1min 46.95sec.

The 29-year-old, who won four of the seven races to secure last season’s downhill World Cup title, finished well clear of her nearest rivals.

Home favourite Breezy Johnson finished as the runner-up, ending 1.47sec off the time set by Goggia.

Mirjam Puchner and Ramona Siebenhofer followed, with the Austrians clocking 1:48.49 and 1:48.91 respectively.

Switzerland’s Corinne Suter, who had been Goggia’s closest rival last season in downhill competitions, was forced to settle for fifth place.

The world champion was 2.02sec behind the winner.

Competition will continue tomorrow with a second downhill event taking place.

Goggia, who missed a home World Championships through injury last season, will seek back-to-back wins as she seeks to build towards her Olympic downhill title defence at Beijing 2022.

The World Cup event in Lake Louise will conclude with super-G competition on Sunday (December 5).
