French rider Julien Epaillard emerged victorious from a thrilling jump-off at the Longines International Equestrian Federation (FEI) Jumping World Cup leg in Spanish capital Madrid.

Epaillard, riding 10-year-old gelding  Billabong du Roumois, produced a clean run in a time of 41.24secs to see off his five rivals.

Epaillard then held his nerve to go clear again to claim his third victory of the week.

"Crazy week," said Epaillard.

"My horse jumped amazingly."

Germany’s David Will, mounting C Vier, also went clear but had to settle for second after finishing in 42.71.

Third place went to Irishman Denis Lynch who crossed in 42.87 on board GC Chopin’s Bushi.

Lynch’s performance saw him to climb to the top of the Western European League rankings with 37 points ahead of Kevin Jochems of The Netherlands on 30 and Jens Fredricson of Sweden on 27.

Germany’s Marcus Ehning, riding Stargold, registered the fastest time of 40.62 but knocked a pole to ground to slip to fourth position.
