There was double delight for Britain in the men’s under-54 kilograms and under-65kg divisions as Thomas Smith and Mark Swan secured the respective titles.

Britain then tasted further success when Paralympic bronze medallist Olivia Broome cleared 107kg to take the under-50kg crown with a junior world record.

"I am feeling over the moon," said Broome.

"It was always a goal of mine to keep setting the records and [become] a junior world champion and now that I have done that I am very happy."

Britain’s victories came in three of the 16 events that took place as Tbilisi hosted a busy opening day of powerlifting action.

Arguably the biggest surprise of the day came in the under-49kg category as Iraq’s Muslim Al-Sudani produced a junior world record lift with 154kg to capture the title from Brazil’s Lucas Dos Santos who was denied a World Championships treble in the division.

Egypt’s anthem was heard for the first time in Georgia thanks to Aymen Khodja’s golden performance in the men’s up to 59kg category with a lift of 128kg.

Ukraine’s Daria Kobylynska secured an emphatic victory in the under-45kg division, winning by a margin of 23kg after lifting 73kg.

Brazil found the top of the podium in the women’s under-41kg contest, with Lara Aparecida de Lima lifting 87kg.

Mexico stole the show in the women’s under-55kg and under-61kg divisions.

Fabiola Perez marked her debut in the event by capturing the under-55kg gold, while Fatima Castellanos was crowned under-61kg champion.

There were also victories for Ukraine’s Zlata Diachuk in the women’s under-69kg category, Brazil’s Valeria Alves in the women’s under-86kg division and Azerbaijan’s Leyla Karimova in the women’s over-86kg.

The final three gold medals of the opening day in Tbilisi were awarded to Russia’s Islam Abdulkadirov, Iran’s Saeid Eskandarzadeh and Hassan Elattar of Egypt.

Abdulkadirov emerged victorious in the men’s under-72kg event, while Eskandarzadeh took the men’s under-80kg title and Elattar succeeded in the men’s under-88kg class.

Russia’s Leonid Voshchikov also took the title in the men’s up to 88kg category with a final lift of 150kg.

The senior World Championships are scheduled to start tomorrow.
